Ruth Irwin started puzzling over the relation between economic growth and climate emissions in the 1980s. 

She did her first degree on the history of colonialism and indigenous culture contact at the University of Auckland,

followed by a Master’s degree in philosophy and education on Nietzsche and Heidegger. 

She wrote a Phd at the University of Glasgow titled Heidegger’s threshold/ climate change and education.

Since then, Ruth Irwin has written several books on climate change, philosophy and economics,

edited 3 collections on philosophy and climate change, and public policy, and written over 60 peer reviewed book chapters and

journal articles. She is currently working on major project called Beyond the Metacrisis.

She taught ‛Climate change and political theory’ and other philosophy papers at the University of Auckland.

Later she set up a new degree on Sustainable Business at AUT University. 

She moved to Fiji to be the Professor of Education, where she taught an Ed.D on globalisation, 

climate change, philosophy, colonialism, and post-colonialism, education, policy and economics. 

She then moved back to Scotland and became the Professor of Education and Head of School at the University of Aberdeen. 

She has taught multiple public seminars and organised community education to raise awareness about

climate change impacts, mitigation, adaptation, and resiliency.
